I woke up on the wrong side of the bed, but only literally

Today I literally woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Peter is out of town and in an act of insanity, or perhaps sheer exhaustion, when I fell into bed last night it was on his side. I woke to the alarm buzzing, and as I rolled out of bed to hit the snooze button, I hit the other half of the bed instead. Similar to attempting to climb one more step in the dark only to find you've reached the top, my stomach lurched as my preconception revolted.

I just hope my literal miscalculation does not translate into it's well known figurative counterpart.

Also, I keep my alarm on the dresser so that I must get out of bed to shut it off, and yet I always use the snooze button (more than once). One would think I would adjust the alarm to the actual time I get up.

I have no idea why I don't, even though I've realized the inconsistancy.

But this morning I only pressed snooze once.  Well, technically twice, but the second time I remembered I planned on making my inaugural attempt at German Pancakes, so I got up anyway.  My goal is to make sure the kids eat breakfast every morning and that it is something other than cereal or, sometimes, a slice of bread thrust into their hand as they are running to the bus stop.  I don't mean something other than that everyday, only half the days.

To do it everyday I would be forced to confront my 2-3 snooze habit more often.  Baby steps.

The thing I have to remind myself about baby steps is that babies may take small steps towards their goal, and they may be quite wobbly, but they sure do take a lot of them, quickly, and get up when they fall.  I think I misuse the term baby steps to mean "I'm too lazy/unmotivated to actually plan on achieving my goal."

But maybe not, as I have managed to make muffins and German pancakes this week and cereal has replaced bus-running-bread-thrusting breakfast the rest of the time (mostly).

The other thing I need to remind myself about baby steps is that I haven't seen What About Bob in years and it might be on the movies-you're-a-loser-if-you-don't-show-your-children-before-they-grow-up list.  I'm not sure about that, though, as I am a pop culture moron.

I have crossed Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, Star Wars, and Sound of Music off that list, though.  Baby steps.

Now I am off to finish prepping for preschool, as it is my turn to host.  We are learning about the letter M so I bought M&M's and we're making M monsters.  Later, I'm making a 3D elephant cake to celebrate Joseph's birthday early as Peter will be out of town again next week. Oh, and I found out yesterday that today is only a half day at school, so the kids will be home around lunch.  Maybe a trip to the library this afternoon is in order?

I should really try to not wake up on the wrong side of the bed anymore; it shorts out my randomness filter.

  1. Love the picture! I snooze the alarm too at least twice when I remember to set it. We do early (6:10am) morning car pool 3 mornings a week. Luckily my hubs usually does it but not today, today it's me hence why I'm on the computer at 6:45am.

Have a good day! Hopefully getting up on the wrong side won't throw off your groove today. (:

  2. I like your goals. I don't like the snooze I set the clock to when I want to wake up however your Dad like to snooze.

  3. I do about as well, if not worse, at breakfasts in the morning. Sigh.

I have not shown my kids any movies on the list except Sound of Music! I myself haven't seen ghost busters, a fact people gasp when they find out. I also never saw goonies. I am ridiculed mercilessly (mostly by my husband) for being so deprived.

  4. I need some of those German Pancakes!! Those are my absolute favorites.

I only hit the snooze button 4 times today.

  5. I am so much happier when I get a few minutes to lay in bed awake before actually physically getting up. I'm a definite snoozer.
And... I'm making German Pancakes for dinner tonight. Couldn't hold off any longer!

  7. Great photo. Loved your getting out of bed description. I hate that "whoops there's another stair" feeling. And I'm coming over for breakfast. Tomorrow good? ;)

  8. Thank goodness it wasn't figurative!

I do much better when I give my alarm clock to my oldest son, let him wake up, and then come get me out of bed. Because I will hit the snooze button forty times, and he doesn't hit it at all. And then when he comes to wake me up... well, he doesn't HAVE a snooze button. So I get up much faster.

  9. I was a snoozer, but Ken is not. So now I set the alarm five minutes early and he gets up and I go back to sleep and then he forces me out of bed when I need to be out. It works. I've been craving German pancackes since I saw your facebook post. Yum.

  10. Love random posts. I'm impressed that you make breakfast most days. I'm a cereal and muffin kind of mom. That's as adventurous as we get most days.

  11. We made our kids watch What About Bob? about 6 weeks ago... the older ones liked it, the younger ones just looked at us like we'd lost it...

and I did not hit the snooze at all this morning. I did however threaten ManOfTheHouse with bodily harm if he didn't shut off that 5:30 alarm before it woke me... you can't go to bed at 1 a.m. and still be energetic enough to exercise at 6...

  12. I like your breakfast plan. Good luck with that! I am attempting the same thing.

P.S. thank you for the comment today :)

  14. I'm positive that too lazy or unmotivated is definitely not in any portion of your personality. Maybe sometimes those things get lost in how tired you are so maybe...sometimes...hitting snooze another time won't be so bad.

I love What About Bob!!! It is one of my all time favorites & is absolutely one that all children need to see. I really thinks it makes them better people!

I think you rock Charlotte & I hope your husband comes back soon so that you have no choice but to wake up on the right side of the bed!

  15. i think you should be allowed to hit snooze for (at least) every child that you gave birth to.

after all, you would'nt want the inventor of the snooze button to feel "un-needed", right!?

snooze away, my dear! snoozzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzze away...

  16. I'm glad it was literal!! And I'm so impressed with your breakfast making skills.

Did you know that 9/22 was Elephant Appreciation Day? Can't wait to see that cake :)

  18. What I want to know about the picture is...did you take the self-photo in the bathroom? I like the color of the tile. :)

I love making breakfasts! Bubble bread, egg burritos, buttermilk pancakes, Belgian waffles, and German pancakes are regulars for us each week. By the time lunch rolls around though, I'm out of ideas--and the energy to make anything good. Here's a tip for your future German pancakes: after pouring the egg batter over the butter, pour in a mostly strained jar of canned peaches and then bake. It's almost like cobbler! Even better sprinkled with lemon juice and powdered sugar as you serve it hot. Mmm.

  19. Wonderful post! Yes, yes, Baby steps! I wake up on Hunky Hubby's side whenever he is out of town. And hey, at least you did not FORGET that it was a half day and LEAVE your kid at the school until some other mom called to "remind" you...

  20. I, too, am a snooze button pusher. Not as bad as I used to be, so I guess that's baby steps?

  21. Snnoze buttons, funny things. I build in one hit when I am setting the alarm. Weird.

  22. okay, what is with the german pancakes lately?? Ive heard 4 people in our family talk of them lately. That is an awesome goal though. I love it when our family starts out together and full of yummy food. When Maddie was in school I did it for a while.
I don't even bother with the snooze, or the alarm for that matter. I never get up to either. HTe only thing that wakes me up is Maddie's begging "I'm HUNGRY mommy. Please, please, please" ;)
