Another Year on the Beach

The bad news is that our house in North Carolina has yet to sell. The good news is that we're able to release the place we're living now. And they're letting us paint the unwashable flat paint walls and take down the 20+ year old blinds. The blinds lasted less than an hour after the call. The first rooms were painted in less than 24. And Peter, whose schedule didn't allow for any down time last summer, can enjoy a summer at the beach. Also, anyone who wanted to visit us while we lived on the water has another whole year to do it!

In case you think I'm exaggerating the walls, I've included a picture of what they looked like after being scrubbed. The owners said they were OK with any light color. My idea of "light" isn't as light as other people's, so it took three choices before Peter said it was light enough. When we went to paint it turned out the "white" walls were really a blue-so-light-you-couldn't-tell so they probably have an extremely pale idea of light color and Peter was right to insist we go lighter.

  1. Yay! Maybe we might actually be able to come see this "beach" you're always talking about. We had disgusting flat paint in the apartment, and it was ridiculous. I can only imagine the nightmare it would be with 1200 kids in the house! ;-)

  2. I bet it looks way better. That paint was nasty. Now if only you could remove those planter things that are all over the house.

  3. Painting always renews a house even if the paint isn't flat. Where are the pictures of the new color?

  4. We have flat paint - I hate it. We're trying to do all the minor repairs to the house before it gets painted, but eventually, we'll have semi-gloss. YAY!

We would LOVE to come visit you. Since we have a whole year to plan, maybe it will actually happen ...

  5. Its cool that they let you paint the house. It is always nice to add a little color to make things feel like new.

  6. I'm sorry your house hasn't sold yet. I didn't know that. How stressful. I'm glad you have such a gorgeous view, though. I love all the pictures on your blog. You and Peter look like kids when Elise was born. :) I loved reading about your trip to DC. How fun. You do a lot of fun things with your kids. I know they'll have wonderful memories of growing up. We miss you here.

  7. Now when you say people have another year to visit...you DO mean all of us that live here and shamelessly want to take advantage of your awesome location, right? I mean, we really enjoy the company and the close proximity of bathroom facilities too.

  8. So do we get to see some before and afters? I wish I'd known that everyone hated flat paint before I painted my girls' room two weeks ago. It looks really cute, but it's the first time I've gone with flat. It was one of those reject cans that can't be returned but is cheap. Hopefully they're old enough to not destroy their bedroom.

Love the first picture of your kids sitting on the sand!

  9. Andrea, Susan, and Emma Jo- any of you are welcome any time. If you live across the country or practically next door. Just let me know.

Mary- good luck. I REALLY dislike flat paint, but it is be easier if it isn't white flat paint.

I was going to put up some after pictures, but that would have involved getting my camera out, and, frankly, I was lazy. Maybe I'll remember to get some pictures when I tackle the kitchen.

  10. I can't wait to take you up on your offer. We get the master bedroom right? When do you plan to bring in the warm weather so we can hit the beach?

  11. I trying. Hard to change the seasons all on my own, though.
