Pioneer Trek

Today, I sent my baby out on a pioneer trek. I was a little nervous, but I knew that Elise was going and would watch out for him and keep him safe :) Actually, even though I knew my husband was going, it was really hard for me to see her go off on a 3 day trip with other kids. Especially when I saw a young man come up and start talking to her ;) For those of you who don't know, you didn't miss Elise's birthday, she is still 11. They wanted Peter to go for medical support and his condition was he got to take Elise with him. And across his chest you see my old digital camera slung. He is under MANY threats to take pictures for the scrapbook and blog!

  1. That's awesome! Our youth left for a three-day trek today too. However, I was glad to be hanging out at the pool celebrating Kassidy's birthday rather than hiking three miles...in pioneer clothes...pushing a handcart...in the sun and wind of Martin's Cove. Still, I'm sure Trek is great and I'll experience and appreciate it someday. ;o)

    Happy birthday to Ryan too!!!

  2. Every year on Ryan's birthday I think about how Kassidy has the same birthday. Has it really been that long ago (7 years?) we had the combined party? Holy cow, we are getting old!

  5. It took me awhile to realize Peter was your baby. I keep thinking why would she send Matthew on the pioneer trek. It will good for Elise to have time alone with her Father. It creates such good memories. Can't wait for the pictures.

  6. wow~ I can't believe Elise is old enough for that! She looks great, so does Peter. Our youth just returned from ours, but none of them looked that authentic.

  7. No, I didn't make it. I was going to, but then a friend of mine offered an old one she had made. All I had to do was tighten the elastic and hem it up. I did make the apron, though.

They were very picky about authentic. If you look close, Peter's collar has been cut off (they wanted you to unpick it, take it off and sew it back on, but I was lazy)

  8. I am not a big fan of the whole pioneer trek. I think they can be great teaching tools, but I think most people go WAY overboard with them. Here are a few horror stories have heard:

Not feeding the kids well (I don't care if the pioneers didn't have a great food supply..we do and they did eat great when they could!)

Making the kids take their shoes off and walk in just socks!)

Making all the boys leave for the army. This just didn't happen. Most of the families that sent men away had older boys that took care of them, either that or they traveled in groups that still had strong men.

Anyway, that is just me though, I am sure she will have a GREAT time. Can't believe she is so old.

  9. They look awesome. I am so jealous. Too bad I don't have a medical degree - I tried to go with the condition that I take my kids but no one would take me seriously.
I'm supposed to check in on your while your baby is gone so let me know if you need ANYTHING.
