A Short Post Announcing the End of Diapers in Our House

I have tried 3 times to write a post about how wonderful it is that my youngest potty trained himself and had only a handful of accidents before getting it. Unfortunately, I can't get around my propensity to share too much information and my comfortableness (after 12 years of changing diapers and potty training 6 kids) in using potty words. In short, I'd read the post I was in the middle of writing and think, "If I'm worried it might be too crass, then it must of really crossed the line." So I kept erasing the posts.

Let's just leave it at this:

  • he has not had any accidents for over a week,

  • he decided to wear underwear a whole 2 weeks before he turned 3 (when I would have pressed the issue),

  • he refuses to sit down to pee but has been finally convinced it is necessary when in the women's public restroom,

  • he keeps going outside wearing only underwear

  • (and for a brief moment today I worried he may have snuck out wearing even less).

And I didn't even have to try to think of a nice word for bowel movement. So there you have it: until I become incontinent myself, I am officially finished with diapers. For 7 years I was changing a child in diapers and for 5 years I was changing two. A dozen years and I am done!! I am one happy, happy mother.

(P.S.- I wait until they're three because I had a horrible, terrible, excruciating experience potty training my oldest. You'd think she would have been ready when she kept trying to change her own poopy diapers, but you'd be wrong. It was horrible enough that I would rather change diapers an extra year and wait till the kids are old enough to be trained in a couple days. This was the first time I learned that it is far better to wait till a child is old enough to learn something rather than to beat us both up trying to do it before they're ready. That lesson was ALMOST worth the terrible experience)

  1. Congratulations! It sounds like a great place to be! Having two in diapers has been exhausting for me. I don't know how you've done it for 5 years!

  2. I AM SO ECSTATICALLY HAPPY FOR YOU!!! We reached that point last year, and it is so very nice. Occasionally when I babysit I have to change a diaper and it is always a good reminder of how great it is to be past that stage with my own kids. Seriously, this is a major milestone in your life as a parent. Someone needs to throw you a party.

  5. I'm so glad I read this. I've been feeling so guilty lately - my son turned 3 in august and everyone is asking if he's potty trained yet. He's gone in the potty but we haven't worked this consistently through the day. But you have 6 kids - that means you are a great example to follow and I can stop feeling guilty. Whew. And your quote "A dozen years and I am done!!" Wow. that would be tough. Do yours try to squirm away, too? That's exercise trying to keep them still just to put the diaper on! Mine try and get away all the time! Then they're free - running with poopy butt all through the house laughing.

  8. Congratulations! I also waited until three years old..........Now if only mine would remember that they were potty trained. I do more laundry now than when I used cloth diapers. You need to get some bling with the extra diaper money.

  9. Goldibug- I can change diapers on complete autopilot now. It doesn't require any conscious thought, my body has memorized the motions.

Mary- I remember when you were talking (writing) about it and I thought, my time will be soon. That was when I first began to get excited about it. I will throw myself a party.

  10. Steph- We will probably be there this summer. We'll make plans for sure.

Gabrielle- I stopped worrying what people thought about my parenting skills a while back. My kids totally would squirm around and try to get free(some worse than others). I got to where I could use my legs to pin their arms and torso down while I changed them (with an occasional small tap on the bum to keep them still). My youngest got to where he would flip his legs over his head to make is easier for me and knew just when to lower them so I could strap on the diaper.

  11. Bikmans- Peter keeps bugging me about getting passport, I wouldn't be surprised if a trip out there was somewhere in our future.

Tucker Mom- I am looking forward to that stage, too. I have really enjoyed only having one at home during the day.

  12. Kimberly- My oldest had a hard time remembering she was potty trained. For my kids being potty trained correlated with fascination about dressing themselves, which meant an explosion of laundry.

  13. Oh happy day!! I am sure he is a very handsome little boy in his big unders (actually I have seen him in his big boy unders and nothing else, very manly.) Oh potty training. Congratulations on being done with that whole mess...and please don't think I am a stalker, I just like people having babies...has your sister decided to have hers yet? I keep checking because I can't stand it that its past her due date.

  14. emma jo- Having a picture of the incredible hulk on your tushie always says manly (almost as much as referring to it as a tushie). Anyway, it is my niece that was pregnant and I believe she had the baby yesterday. 12 days late, poor woman.

  20. I'm all about waiting to potty train too. It is something I've done way to many times in my job and I just don't want headache with it in my home. Congrats to Matthew ... and if you are looking for something to do with that extra diaper money, just send it to me!

  21. Aaaah! Emmy keeps trying to change her own diapers and I was half convinced that she needed a phyciatrist. Thanks for posting that...we're waiting at this point too! It's the WORST!
